What Is NASTF SDRM?

The Secure Data Release Model (SDRM) is a credential-validation system managed by the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF). It verifies the identity of automotive professionals performing certain security-related vehicle functions.

When a supported function requires validation, the technician enters an active Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) ID and a passcode generated through NASTF’s multifactor authentication system. SDRM validates the technician and records the applicable transaction.

SDRM does not perform the key programming or immobilizer function. It verifies that the person using the tool is authorized to complete the operation.

Why Is SDRM Being Adopted?

Diagnostic and key programming tools can access sensitive vehicle functions. The NASTF scan tool validation program adds credential verification and accountability when these functions are performed through supported aftermarket tools.

Which Functions Require SDRM Validation?

SDRM validation applies to supported functions that could be used to create a key, restore vehicle access, or interact with an immobilizer system.

Requirements can vary by manufacturer, model, model year, selected function, and available tool coverage. Your TOPDON tool will prompt you when SDRM validation is required for a supported operation.

Normal diagnostic and service functions are not affected simply because a tool also supports key programming or immobilizer functions.

TOPDON products not listed above are not included in the currently announced rollout.

What Do You Need for SDRM Validation?

Before performing an affected security-related operation, technicians will need:

An Active VSP Credential

Hold a current Vehicle Security Professional credential issued by NASTF.

A VSP ID and MFA Passcode

Use your individual VSP ID and a passcode generated through NASTF’s multifactor authentication system.

Updated TOPDON Software

Install the latest available software and vehicle coverage updates on your supported TOPDON tool.

A Reliable Internet Connection

The tool must communicate with NASTF to validate the technician’s credentials.

Technicians are also responsible for confirming the customer’s identity and verifying their ownership of or legal authority over the vehicle.

VSP credentials are issued to individual technicians and cannot be shared. NASTF manages applications, approvals, fees, renewals, and credential policies. TOPDON does not issue or approve VSP credentials.

How SDRM Works With TOPDON Tools

TOPDON’s SDRM integration validates the technician before an affected security-related function can proceed.

    Select the Function

    Open the supported key programming, All Keys Lost, immobilizer, or other security-related operation on your TOPDON tool.

    Enter Your Credentials

    When prompted, enter your active VSP ID and the passcode generated through NASTF’s multifactor authentication system.

    Complete Validation

    The tool communicates with NASTF to validate your credentials and create the applicable transaction record.

    Continue the Operation

    Once validation is successful, follow the instructions on your TOPDON tool to complete the selected function.

The screens, prompts, and workflow may vary by TOPDON product, software version, vehicle, and selected function.

Why Is TOPDON Adding SDRM Validation?

TOPDON is participating in a broader aftermarket security initiative. SDRM is being integrated into supported tools to verify technicians, help prevent unauthorized vehicle access, discourage tool theft, and provide accountability for sensitive operations.

TOPDON did not create the VSP program and does not control its credentialing requirements.

Will SDRM Affect Normal Diagnostic Functions?

No. SDRM validation applies to supported security-related operations. Normal functions such as reading trouble codes, viewing live data, performing active tests, and completing standard maintenance resets do not require a VSP credential.

Will Every Key or Immobilizer Function Require Validation?

Not necessarily. Requirements can vary by manufacturer, vehicle, model year, function, and tool coverage. The TOPDON tool will request validation when it is required for a supported operation.

Does Every Technician Need a VSP Credential?

Each technician who independently performs affected security-related operations must use an active VSP credential issued to that individual. Technicians who only perform normal diagnostic and service functions do not need a VSP credential for those activities.

Can Technicians Share a VSP ID?

No. VSP credentials belong to individual technicians and cannot be shared. The credentialed technician must be directly involved in the security-related transaction.

Does TOPDON Issue VSP Credentials?

No. NASTF manages VSP applications, eligibility requirements, approvals, fees, renewals, and program policies. TOPDON integrates NASTF validation into supported tools but does not issue or approve credentials.

What Happens If I Do Not Have a VSP Credential?

You will not be able to complete a supported function that requires SDRM validation. Diagnostic and service functions that do not require security validation should remain available.

If you regularly perform key programming or immobilizer work, apply through NASTF before you need to complete an affected operation.
