Whitepaper: State of U.S. Auto Diagnostic Tools

The automotive repair industry plays a vital role in the U.S. economy. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are an estimated 805,000 automotive service technicians and mechanics in the U.S. as of September 2024. To further illustrate the scale of the auto repair industry, IBIS World, a leading industry research company, reported that U.S. auto mechanics were expected to contribute $89.6 billion in revenue to the U.S. economy in 2025.

Despite its size and economic impact in the U.S., like other services-based professions, auto repair professionals are facing new challenges from advancing technology and sophisticated vehicle systems, as well as the diagnostic tools used to repair them.

In September 2025, TOPDON USA conducted a month-long survey to better understand the opportunities and challenges presented by auto repair diagnostic tools. This white paper presents the findings of those surveyed and provides insight into the diagnostic tools most utilized by technicians, as well as the challenges and opportunities they face.
