Watch & Learn: Key Programming With a TOPDON T-Ninja Box
Like every other aspect of modern vehicles, the once-simple car key has evolved into a technology-packed electronic device. This opens up a number of convenient features for car owners. For the technician, however, the job of cutting and programming keys requires a new generation of tools and procedures.
In the YouTube video “Key Programming With TOPDON T-Ninja Box,” TOPDON National Training and Development Manager Haakan Light walks viewers through the process using a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta as a test subject.
Cutting and programming a key for a modern vehicle involves far more than just mastering a handful of technical skills. “It’s very important that you are looking after the security of the customer’s vehicle,” Light advises. The process starts with verifying that the vehicle actually belongs to the customer before cutting keys and programming them to the vehicle, followed by other security procedures during programming to ensure the customer’s data is safe.
Having the right tool for the job clears a smooth path for the technician. The tools Light uses include a TOPDON TP48 tire pressure monitoring tool which can test the radio frequency of the key, the TOPDON T-Ninja Box key programming tool, the Phoenix Max diagnostic scanner, and a TOPDON T30000 or T90000 smart charger for maintaining a stable power supply during the process.
The video covers several aspects of key programming, such as the use of test keys for practice before cutting the new remote with the blade key, how to check the remote’s FCC ID and megahertz, dealing with anti-theft data, and using an optical decoder to decode key bitting. Light shows the programming progression on the Phoenix Max’s screen for a clear illustration of the process.
